Super Bowl lV Wrap-up

Capping off a nearly perfect season the Seattle Seahawks relied heavily on their stars to hold on and defeating the Minnesota Vikings 48-43 in PAFL Super Bowl 4. By winning their 18 th game in a row, the Seahawks finished up with a 15-1 regular season record and victories over Cincinnati and Indianapolis in the AFC playoffs, and then dispatched a formidable Minnesota Vikings in the Super Bowl;

SB4 started off quickly after a pair of incomplete passes, Russell Wilson scrambled for 19 yards followed by a 64 yard TD bomb to DeAndre Hopkins for the first score of the day.

The Vikes stormed back with a 7 play, 75 yard drive capped by a 2 yard plunge from Grimes evening the score at 7.

It wouldn't stay there very long as Ross took the ensuing kickoff back 95 yards for a TD and just that quickly the lead changed again to Seattle 14, Minnesota 7.

Everything was still seemingly coming up roses for the 'Hawks as two plays later Fuller picked off Rivers in Viking territory and it looked like it would be a long day for the Vikes. Seven plays later the Seahawks turned the ball over on downs at the two yard line. Rivers hit Smith Sr for a 7 yard score after the 98 yard drive that followed and the momentum shift was huge as the sequence of events just a few minutes earlier had shifted from Seattle at the 2 yard line looking to go up 21-7 but instead stood tied at 14-14.

Second quarter is no less exciting than the 1st was. Wilson hit Hopkins in stride for a 47 yard TD. The Vikings fumbled the ball a couple of plays later and Wilson connected with Hopkins again for their third TD of the day and made the score 28-14 in favor of Seattle. Minnesota ground out a 10 play drive ending up with a 46 yard FG. Seattle answered with a 10 play drive of their own with Wilson hooking up with Hopkins for the 4th time in the first half. The Vikes managed a FG as time expired in the first half with the score 35-20 Seattle.

Third period continued the offense for both teams as the Vikes came out of the locker room snorting and frothing like rabid woodland creatures and quickly scored on a 37 yard Smith SR catch and run bringing the Vikings' deficit to 8 points. The teams exchanged punts with Julius Peppers blocking Minnesota's punt attempt at the Vikes 18 yard line after which Wilson threw yet another TD pass to Hopkins (his 5th TD of the game) pushing the lead to 15. Rivers then hit Jones on a long out and Jones quickly turned upfield and scored.

4th quarter has a Viking FG early followed by a 14 play 75 yard drive with Seattle using the style that drove their success all season long - the ground game. Wilson hit Fitzgerald on a slant pass touchdown with 2:37 left and an 11 point lead. Minnesota needed a minimum of 2 scores and the did get one more TD before Rivers was sacked by Klug as time expired. Final score: Seattle 48, Minnesota 43.

QB Phillip Rivers shredded the Hawks secondary for 531 yards and 4 TDs but was sacked 6 times and picked off once. Russell Wilson was a bit more efficient with 277 yard passing for 6 tds and only two sacks.

Steve Smith SR has the game of his career with 11 receptions for 210 yards and 3 touchdowns. DeAndre Hopkins had an incredible game as well with 7 receptions for 200 yards and 5 TDs and in a tough vote Hopkins would be my MVP for the game.
