Week 2 Defensive Slugfest in muddy Browns Stadium

Coach Todd Cichon and his San Francisco 49ers traveled east to play the Cleveland Browns in what turn out to be a perfect weather game for old school football. Cleveland coach Stan Milton wonder how much the passing game would be effective with winds gusting 10-20 mph and Heavy Rain that lasted most of the game. After a scoreless 1st quarter that had a total of 5 punts, the first big play of the game came when Cleveland Stefon Diggs broke loose for 25 yards off an end around play. Eli Manning connected on two passes to his tight-ends Jordan Akins and Irv Smith both 12 yards each. Joe Mixon ran right on stretch run for 11 yards down to the 2. With the Browns on the door steps of the game first touchdown, the defenders from San Francisco dugged their cleats into the mud and made their stand. Three runs from the 2 gained minus one yard as the Browns was forced to kick the field goal. CLE 3-0

After the score the 49ers Ryan Fitzpatrick came out gunning. First a 17 yards out pass to DK Metcalf, followed by another out pass this time to his tight end Jacob Hollister picking up another 13 yards. On second and ten Fitzpatrick next pass was intercepted by Stephon Gilmore who returned it 43 yards down to SF 24. Again, the 49ers defense stepped up forcing a three and out and another field goal from the Browns. CLE 6-0
The second half started as the rain continue to pour. The 49ers would get the ball first and would get their biggest play of the game when Fitzpatrick was forced out of the pocket found Odell Beckham breaking route over the middle, made a one handed catch and then finding room to run for 39 yards down to the Cleveland 3. But, as the 49ers defense had done in the first half, the Browns defense would now do in the second half. A first down run was stopped for no gain. Second down short cross pass was tipped by Bobby Wagner and an incompletion. On third down and goal from the three Fitzpatrick was sacked by Aaron Donald and a loss of three. San Fran would have to settle for the field goal. CLE 6-3

With 19 seconds in the third the games next big offensive break came from Cleveland. Facing a third and one from their 25, Manning audible out of the run and connected with Akins down the field for 39 yards to SF 36. Once again, the 49ers defense stood their ground as the Brown got minus 2 yards on the next three plays forcing a punt.
The start of the 4th had the 49ers marching down the field. On third and eight Fitzpatrick to Beckham for 11 yards to keep the drive alive. Their next third down and seven they picked up 13 from a catch by Hollister. A pass interference called on James Bradberry added another 19 yards down to CLE 19. Two plays later a sack by Brandon Graham pushed the 49ers back eight yards forcing a field goal two plays later. TIED 6-6
Manning over the middle to Diggs for 22 yards on a first down pass. Three plays later on third and 11, Diggs second catch of the drive for 18 yards near midfield. Two plays later, on third and nine, Manning to Adam Humphries for 13 yards down to the 21. The 49ers would not give up another yard and with 2:13 left, Cleveland Younghoe Koo would kick his third field goal of the game. CLE 9-6

Ryan Fitzpatrick was sacked ( Markus Golden 3rd) on 4th and ten with 1:35 left, ending this rain soaked muddy game.
