CHARGERS DEAL MONTGOMERY TO DOLPHINS

San Diego, July 3rd, 2021:After months of rumors, the San Diego Chargers finally found a trade partner for the services of David Montgomery, acquiring first and third-round draft picks from the Miami Dolphins for the Chargers’ second-year running back.

According to sources within the Chargers’ organization, the Chargers had three different deals agreed upon in the off-season, only to see each of them fall through when those other teams backed out for one reason or another.

Charger general manager Hank Sienzant would neither confirm nor deny the substance of that claim but did say “We’re very pleased with the way this turned out. Like in all good trades, both teams saw an opportunity to help their squads, and so this deal came together very quickly and with little back-and-forth negotiation.”

The Chargers had a crowded backfield situation with Montgomery, Josh Jacobs, and two rookie running backs in second-round selection Antonio Gibson and fifth-rounder Darrynton Evans until this deal with the Dolphins. Montgomery led the team as a rookie in rushing attempts, rushing yards, and rushing touchdowns, but it was Josh Jacobs who was the Chargers' primary running back until late in the season when Jacobs, unfortunately, went down with an injury and missed nearly four full games. Montgomery, who had played second fiddle to Jacobs until that point, stepped in and took advantage of his opportunity in Jacobs absence and established himself as a running back who could be a lead back in the PAFL.

Both backs finished with over a thousand yards on the ground as rookies. Montgomery ended the season as the PAFL's sixth-leading rusher, with 1180 yards on 215 carries, ten touchdowns, and a 5.5 average. Jacobs finished behind Montgomery, ninth-best, with 1120 yards on 177 carries, seven touchdowns, and a 6.3 average.

With the quick development of Antonio Gibson, the Chargers knew they had too many quality backs than they could ever realistically use, and something had to give. With the trade of Montgomery, it gave. Josh Jacobs goes back to being the primary back, and the two rookie running backs are a distant second and third on the Chargers’ depth chart. Montgomery moves on to the Dolphins where he gets his golden opportunity to be their starting running back.

Montgomery was drafted 40th overall prior to his rookie season and was traded for the 22nd and 77th picks overall. It's clearly not the bounty the Chargers had hoped for, but the Chargers telegraphed this trade months in advance, removing much of their leverage in the deal.
