Saints Bedeviled With Top Pick?

For many teams, having the top pick in the annual PAFL draft would be a God-send, a gift from heaven, a blessed moment. But, for the New Orleans Saints, possessing that #1 spot might prove to be a true curse indeed. The franchise has been a perennial doormat organization having only two seasons (2012 and 2015) where they finished with a record above .500. Now, though, they have a chance, a golden chance at that, to get the new face of their franchise in the fold and begin to pave the way for years of success.

But, hold on everyone, what do we see here? Obviously, the concensus jewel of this draft was supposed to be Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence, afterall, has been dubbed a "generational talent" and went to the RNFL Jacksonville Jaguars replete with a shiny new big name head coach in the form of Urban Meyer. And, poof, expectations were that Lawrence would take the NFL by storm and the world would be utterly amazed. But, alas poor Yorick, that immediate reward has not yet been paid and Lawrence is struggling mightily outside the confines of the collegiate ranks of the ACC and being surrounded by an over-whelming plethora of superior talent. In his most recent debacle, he led the Jags to their franchise record 17th straight defeat while compiling a woeful 13-33-118 stat sheet that included 2 picks and a pathetic 30.7 QBR! One might be willing to forgive such a nightmare but Lawrence has really not had a promising overall start to his "generational talent" monicker. In fact, he has a horrific 60.3 rating on the year (30th in the NFL) with 5 TDs and 7 interceptions!

Now, on another note, we have the Patriots' Mac Jones. Jones, amazingly the one signal caller that constantly seemed to drop in value as the RNFL draft neared, has completed 67.5% of his passes for 737 yards with 2 TDs and 3 picks for a 79.1 rating. His stats are not exactly eye-popping but they are the best among all NFL rookies and he does seem comfortably entrenched in New England and getting high marks.

And, so, here we have the dilemma confronting the Saints. Do they select the over-whelmingly agreed upon stud in Lawrence or opt to go with Jones and his apparent liklihood to at least be a solid signal caller? Could they even ponder (I shudder to think) taking the Bears' Justin Fields, the Jets' Zach Wilson, or the Niners' Trey Lance? Fields was tabbed by the media pundits as the savior that just had to be given the reins in Chitown. He got the reins and was instantly bucked into reality and near unconciousnees with one of the worst QB performances in Bear history. Wilson has been running for his life almsot every play this year and his recent 4 pick disaster was, well, Titanic-like in NY. Lance is still sitting behind Jimmy G. who has played well enough to keep his job with a 15th rated 101.2 QBR.

So, who is it gonna be New Orleans? You were given manna from Heaven...Now feast.
