Giant Collapse in Green Bay

Green Bay, Wisconsin

The PFL has had many exciting playoff games and its history but last Friday evening the Packers and Giants played in a game that will be remembered for years.

So what happened? Very briefly It was a good evenly fought first half which ended with the Giants up 7-3. It was all defense on both sides. 3rd quarter was the same way up until about the 6 minute mark when the giants got the gift of all gifts. On a punt the Packers returner got hit, fumbled and it was returned for a TD. He had used all of his challenges in the first half so they couldn't even challenge it. ON THE VERY NEXT KICKOFF, the Packers returner caught the ball, ran, got hit, fumbled, and it was returned for a TD. All of sudden the Giants were up 21-3. The 3rd quarter ended 21-10.

The 4th quarter was moving along and the Giants extended the lead 24-10 with about 6 minutes left. The Packers were driving and the Giants were content with that as long as he didn't score quick. On the Giants 30 yard line the Packers QB found the weak spot on a play and scored with about 3 minutes left. 24-17. The Giants got the ball. On a 3rd down Giants QB David Carr completed a pass beyond the marker but they marked it 4th and inches. They challenged the play but they only reviewed whether or not he caught it in bounds not the spot of the ball even though the replay showed he stepped out past the marker. The Packers got the ball and on the first play he connects on a streak down the left hand side. 24-24. The Giants get the ball back. Without getting a first down, David Carr was intercepted inside the Giants 20. They played loose defense to let the Packers score to get the ball back since the Giants had no TO's. 24-31. The Giants got the ball back. Interception. And that is how you scored 21 points in under 6 minutes, down 24-10, to complete one of the greatest collapses in the history of Madden.

First let me say that hats off to Omari who has always been a good guy in our games and always played clean, straight up and with good sportsmanship. Also I don't think enough has been said about what he's had to overcome this season and this game was a microcosm of that. He's one game away from his third straight Super Bowl appearance and anyone who's been there can tell you how hard it is just to get to 1. On top of that he's had to do it with everyone gunning for him and without his top running back Jackie Moon. In this game he could've easily gotten frustrated and upset after that ridiculously lucky two fumble TD's returned in a row but he kept at it. So i want to make sure he gets the proper credit and recognition.

Secondly, its taken me a week to finally write this out because my emotions were all over the place. Its the most dejected and embarrassed I've been after a loss, not because I lost, but in the way I lost. Obviously though the only person I can blame is myself. After that second returned TD and up 21-3 I felt the game was over and who wouldn't? A smart coach wouldn't. Omari is tough in the pass game and if anything I should've been more concerned after that because in many ways he's at his best when he's down and he has to pass. That was my fatal flaw. Up 14 with 6 minutes left is plenty of time for a team to tie it up. Instead I was thinking about how I was going to beat Scotty in the Championship game and I was congratulating myself for being the guy that beat the two-time defending champ. It just goes to show if you don't respect the game the game will come back and kill you.

Congrats Omari! Obviously I have a lot of work to do.

Giants GM/Coach on the Hot Seat

(East Rutherford, New Jersey) - Following a heartbreaking collapse against the Cowboys and a bad loss against the Eagles, the Giants now find themselves at 6-4 and on the brink of missing the playoffs for the first time in 8 seasons.

Now after these recent setbacks and a controversial first round trade in the offseason, loyal fans have had enough and are calling for the head of the GM and Coach. "Its been 10 years and what do we got to show for it?! Bupkus!" Additionally, ownership is also non-committal about the direction of the franchise.

With a difficult schedule coming up it'll be interesting to see how the team responds. If they continue to flop then it'll be hard for the current leadership to say they haven't lost the team. Up next for the Giants is at San Francisco to face the first place 49ers.

Giants Prepare to Face New Look Cowboys

Giants fans are gearing up to see the dreaded Cowboys walk into MetLife Stadium this week. While the Giants have dominated the Cowboys in their matchup, this week's game has a different feel to it. Under the new leadership of Mike Kleinknecht the Cowboys have gotten off to a 6-2 start, good enough for a tie for first place with the Giants, and have been red hot as of late. The Cowboys have been good before but the new leadership makes this matchup a different one. This Cowboys team is not only winning but are dominating. They boast the league's leading offense and the third best defense.

The Giants on the other hand are steady as she goes. With a 6-2 record their tried and true formula of good defense and pounding the rock has gotten them off to another good start. The question is whether it will translate to a good finish. Even though he took the team to the Championship game last year, 2nd year QB Derek Carr is still learning and has many doubters. The Giants also are entering into a rough patch in their schedule where they play the Cowboys, Eagles and 49ers. All potential losses.

So the fans are in a rabid frenzy to welcome the Cowboys and help Big Blue remind the Cowboys that the NFC East belongs to the team in blue from New Jersey.

Giants Fans Ready to Lynch the GM

In what seemed as a dubious move at best, the Giants used the 14th pick overall in the draft to draft a position that they just traded away to move up to that spot. On the eve of draft day, the Giants made a move that sent popular and longtime ROLB Bruce Carter to the Buffalo Bills and their 29th pick in the first round to move up to the 14th pick overall when they then went ahead and drafted, you guessed it a ROLB.

"What a bonehead move! We aren't the Jets!"

"Let me get this straight, you have a rookie QB who led you to the championship game, you need offense, and you trade a guy like Carter to get a rookie who won't be as good? Whaddaya a moron!?"

"It was dumb, it stinks and I don't like it!"

Were some of the comments made by angry fans after the pick. Behind the scenes the rumors were that the Giants were hoping to land one of the top WR's and HB's in the draft. That obviously didn't work out well for them and when the 14th pick came up ROLB Shembo was the best player available.

"We appreciate all the years Carter gave us but we feel we needed to get younger at several positions and LB was one of them. Unfortunately in this business sometimes you have to part ways with popular guys in order to keep improving" said the Giants GM.

The pick itself, ROLB Prince Shembo from Notre Dame, in a vacuum is not terrible. He's a quick LB who has great hands, something ROLB Carter didn't have. While Giants fans would've preferred someone else to help out on offense Shembo should pencil in nicely for the Giants for many years.

Giants Retire Eli Manning's Number

Going into their last home game of the season, the Giants will be honoring their immediate past by retiring the #10 that Eli Manning so long held.

After last season which included a Super Bowl appearance, Eli Manning decided to hang it up at the age of 37. He led the Giants for several seasons (exact number not known cuz of the restart) which included at least 6 playoff appearances in 7 seasons, 5 NFC East Division championships, 3 Conference Championship games, and 1-1 in Super Bowls (1 was pre-restart). He compiled over 22,000 passing yards, 133 TD's, 92 Int's, and a QB rating of 82.3.

Even though he doesn't have the flashiest numbers, he was the captain of a team that was consistently successful for close to 10 seasons.

"Every offseason when we would evaluate where we needed to improve, the QB position was never even a second thought. He never got hurt and he was a rock of consistency" said Giants GM.

"I had a great career and I'm glad that I spent it entirely with the Giants organization. We had a lot of successes but boy don't I wish I could have that last game back" said Eli Manning.

In their first season without Eli, the Giants as a team have been successful even though their rookie QB Derek Carr has struggled at times. "We knew it was going to be a bumpy road this season which is why the plan in the offseason was to build up the team in other areas in order to give Derek as much support as possible on both sides of the ball. It certainly has been a weekly reminder of how good and consistent Eli was but we're ecstatic at the position we're in and the progress Derek has made as the season has gone on and we're confident he can reach the greatness of Eli with a little time and support" said the Giants GM.

NFC Championship Game: Panthers vs. Giants

Charlotte, North Carolina was the site of the PFL NFC Championship game where the #2 seed Carolina Panthers hosted the #4 seed New York Giants for the right to represent the NFC in the PFL Bowl. Both of these teams enter the game a bit short handed due to injuries, the Panthers suffering the more critical blow by losing their starting QB. Regardless, both teams were going to use sheer grit to try to win this game.

The Giants kicked off to the Panthers and on their first drive the Panthers offense led by backup QB Colt McCoy was clicking. McCoy hit his TE's a couple of time to get them into FG range and was looking for more. They got to the 30 yard line when the drive stalled and a holding penalty pushed them back out of FG range. Likewise, the Giants took their initial drive and also marched down the field but settled for a FG. Both drives chewed up a ton of clock and the first quarter ended with the Giants up 3-0.

In the second quarter, both defenses adjusted and the hitting was brutal. Players were going in and out of game due to injury. After exchanging punts the Giants offense were backed up deep on their own 17 yard line. The crowd was loud trying to confuse the offense. Then on a 2nd down, Eli found his TE Conway down the field on a broken play and hit him perfectly in stride. The big TE rumbled his way into the endzone for the long score and the Giants extended their lead to 10-0!

With the crowd stunned, the Panthers were not fazed. McCoy and the offense went back to work and quickly found themselves deep in Giants territory. However, once again the Giants defense stepped up and forced them to kick a FG and the Panthers drew to within a score 10-3.

The Giants responded once again with a nice drive. As they were within the 10 yard line and looking to break the game open, Eli was pressured and threw an INT in the ENDZONE! A huge missed opportunity but luckily the Giants defense was true again and gave the ball back to the offense who kicked another FG before halftime to extend the lead to 13-3.

The Giants opened the second half with the ball and once again made their way into the redzone. Once again trying to break the game open but for the 2nd time Eli threw an interception in the endzone!! The Panthers D was coming up huge! After forcing the Panthers to punt, the Giants offense got the ball back and AGAIN the Panthers defense forced Eli into another interception!! This time they had fantastic field position on the Giants 30.

This was the turning point in the game. With their backs to the wall, the crowd roaring and a small lead, the Giants defense led by old vets Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck rose to the challenge. With a 1st and goal, the Giants defense stuffed a couple of runs and defended a pass to force the Panthers into a FG. Having missed a golden opportunity to cut the deficit to 3 points, the Panthers only brought the lead down 13-6 but still within reach.

After committing 3 turnovers, the Giants offense went back to basics and were able to put together a couple of long time consuming drives. They extended their lead to 19-6. The defense continued to pressure QB Colt McCoy, who was sacked 5 times, and frustrated the Panthers offense.

With under a minute remaining, the Panthers got life when McCoy found Streater on the sideline and the big WR broke free from a tackle and high stepped it into the endzone to bring the Panthers to within 6.

With the score 19-13 Giants, :50 seconds remaining, it all came down to the onside kick. The Panthers kicker put the ball in play, it bounced a couple of times and landed in the arms of old veteran FB Brandon Jacobs who came down at the Giants 30! After a couple of kneel downs the game was over and the Giants were headed back to the PFL Bowl for the first time in 10 seasons!!!

"I first and foremost want to congratulate Coach Branch and the Panthers who put together a fantastic season and overcame a lot to get to this point. Not too many teams can accomplish what they did facing those obstacles. They played a good, clean, hard game and were as gracious as champions could be after the game. We were fortunate to make it to the bowl but when you play good well run teams with good people like Panthers, Lions and the Vikings it makes it enjoyable win or lose." -Coach Booey

"I'm also extremely happy for our guys who fought all season and beat some really excellent teams to make it to the PFL Bowl. I'm especially happy for our vets Eli, FB Brandon Jacobs, WR Steve Smith, DE's Osi and Justin and others. They've been the core of this team for a good 10 years and to see them have one more shot to win it all as their careers are winding down makes this very satisfying." -Coach Booey

"We won a PFL Bowl 10 years ago and haven't been back since. To make it back again after all this times makes you appreciate it and realize that the PFL is the best madden league out there with the best group of coaches you can compete against who are NOT going to make it easy for you." -Coach Booey.

Giants vs. Lions II: Miracle in Detroit

For the second straight week the Giants faced a team which they played last season in the playoffs. This week they took on the 15-1 defending PFL Bowl Champion Lions who beat the Giants soundly in the NFC Championship game last season. As the #6 seed facing the #1 seed on the road, the Giants were underdogs.

The game kicked off and the Giants defense came to play. There were some big hits that saw the receiver violently separated by the ball. Even with the early energy, the Lions quickly put together a drive that saw them cut through the Giants defense like hot knife through butter. Javhid Best walked into the endzone to give the Lions a 7-0 lead.

It seemed like it was going to be more of the same. However, on the first play of the very next drive, QB Eli Manning found a streaking WR down the sidelines and hit him perfectly in stride that allowed him to trot into the endzone to tie the game up 7-7!! The crowd was stunned at the quick response.

The Giants defense, energized by the quick score, slowed the Lions offense down and forced them to punt. QB Eli Manning went to work leading a drive into Lions territory. Everything was going the Giants way when Eli took a hit and was knocked out of the game. Without flinching, the Giants put the ball in backup QB Kirk Cousins' hands. He stepped up and continued a drive that ended with a TD pass to give the Giants a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Eli return and with the early lead, the Giants continued to put pressure on the Lions. They added a FG to go up 17-7. Then towards the end of the half, the Lions got a drive cooking that had them at midfield. Then on a pass play, QB Tannehill was flushed out of the pocket and began to scramble. As he dove for the first down he fumbled the ball!!! With the lucky break, the Giants offense wanted to take advantage and break the game wide open. With under 20 seconds left in the half and on 3rd down, Eli found an open WR Steve Smith in the endzone but the ball went right through his hands!! They settled for a FG and a lead of 20-7.

Coming out in the second half down 13, the defending champs did not panic. The defense held the Giants offense the whole quarter, and the offense was able to put together an early drive that ended with Javhid Best once again plunging into the endzone to bring the Lions within a very reachable 6 points.

In the 4th quarter, once again the Lions defense held the Giants and gave the ball back to the offense. QB Tannehill methodically drove the Lions downfield. Then in the middle of the 4th quarter, Tannehill found a wide open TE Beckum in the endzone, who the Giants had released in the offseason, to give the Lions a 21-20 lead! The crowd roared!

With the stadium rocking, the Giants and Eli Manning finally got the offense going again. They drove down the field but with about 3 minutes remaining in the game, the drive stalled and they had to settle for a FG from rookie kicker Justin Tucker who put it through to give the Giants a shaky 23-21 lead. It was now up to the defense.

The defending champ Lions responded just like champs should. Tannehill was driving them down and overcame a holding penalty to put the Lions at the Giants 35 yard line with under a minute to go. On the edge of FG range, the Lions decided to pound the rock and eat up all the clock and just get a little closer for a game winning FG. The Giants defense completely sold out on the run and actually drove the Lions back on a couple of runs. On a 3rd and long with 40 seconds left, the Lions ran the ball again and this time Javhid Best broke through the Giants line. He was at the 35, 30, 25 and was about to get a first down to seal the game when he FUMBLED THE BALL!!!! Backup Giants LB Joel Duff picked up the ball!!! They turned the ball over and there was no booth review!!!

The Giants kneeled down 3 times and defeated the defending champs 23-21 to advance to the NFC Championship game for the second consecutive season. Do you believe in Miracles??? YESSS!!!

Thanks again Jimmy for the great game. I always try to just make it a game with you since it takes a lot of things to go my way to win. A different bounce and the game goes the other way. Great game coach!

Giants vs. Vikings II: The King's Revenge

The Giants and Vikings met for the second consecutive year in the playoffs. Last season it was in the Divisional game where the Giants pulled out a controversial win now known as "The Fumbled Interception." This season these two teams met at the scene of the crime in the Wild Card Round.

The first quarter saw the Vikings come out playing hard nosed good defensive football which was enough for a 3-0 lead. After grabbing the lead, the Giants quickly wrestled the lead back with two long runs on a drive that ended in a TD. By halftime they had extended their lead to 14-3 and by the 3rd quarter it was 21-3 with the Giants in full control.

As they say, "it is darkest before dawn." Late in the 3rd quarter and needing a score the Vikings did just that with a long throw that brought them to within 21-10.

In the fourth quarter, with the Vikings driving, the Giants Defense turned them over on downs on their own 20. Then as the Giants began to drive, burning clock, it began to snow. They chewed off a good 5 minutes off the clock and set up for a FG. Since it began to snow the field became a mess and Giants rookie Kicker Justin Tucker pulled the FG wide right.

The Vikings wasted no time since time was limited at 6 minutes left in the game down 11. They drove down again but AGAIN the Giants defense turned them over on downs in their own redzone. With only 3:40 minutes left the Giants felt comfortable. That was when on a 3rd and long Eli Manning throw an out to the far sideline and was INTERCEPTED!!!!!! The Vikings DB rumbled, Bumbled and STUMBLED into the endzone!!!!! The Vikings had life!

They went for two and came up short. Nevertheless down 21-16 they had a shot if they could stop the Giants offense. After driving to about midfield the Giants pinned them down in their own 10 with a little over a minute left. The Vikings faced a 4th and long on their own 30. But the resilient Vikings COULD NOT BE KILLED OFF!! They converted a 4th and 10 and now were at midfield. Under a minute left and no timeouts they kept driving and driving. Vikings QB Osweiler was finding the open man slowly marching the Vikings down.

As the Vikings marched down, the Giants defense on their heels, the crowd gasping for air, there was one opponent the Vikings could not beat.......the Clock. The Vikings drive ended due to time at the Giants 20 yard line.

A great game as usual with Scotty and it seems to always be dramatic.

Great game Scotty!
