Week 9 - Game writeups

Buffalo has had 2 tough losses in a row, and while they would be hard pressed to miss the playoffs, they have fallen out of the discussion of winning the AFC East.  The Giants are in the middle of their own battle to keep pace in the NFC East, with a couple of very good teams looking like they will be staying home in that conference.  Clearly, this game will have more bearing on the NFC playoff picture than the AFC, but I suspect that Buffalo will somehow get back on the winning track and manage to squeak out a win. Buffalo 27 - New York 24

Washington (3-5) @ Los Angeles (N) (6-2)
Washington is coming off it's most impressive game of the season so far, where Garoppolo threw for 5 TD's and Barkley hit 100 yards rushing in the win over the Chiefs.  Meanwhile, the Rams have their swag back the last 2 weeks since the Sibling Bowl, and LA is looking to string some wins together and solidify their control on the West.  While Andy has certainly gotten every drop of milk from this cow, I am guessing this might be a week where he starts shopping for almond milk, as he'll be hard pressed to stop the Rams. Washington 17 - Los Angeles (N) 27

San Francisco (5-3) @ Jacksonville (8-0)
Other than 1 game against New Orleans, San Francisco has won every game they have been favored in, and managed to pull a couple of upsets along the way, on their way to the lead in the AFC West.  Meanwhile, Jacksonville pulled off the tough win against Buffalo a couple of weeks back, and are currently tied for the AFC East lead, where the winner almost assuredly gets the top seed and a bye come playoff time.  While San Francisco is playing legitimate football, I can't see them keeping pace with the Jags, as the race for West continues to simmer.  San Francisco 20 - Jacksonville 30

New Orleans (2-6) @ Indianapolis (4-4)
The Colts have seemed to right the ship and get back to .500 and into the AFC playoff talk, while New Orleans has managed to stay out of the basement while in the midst of their rebuilding effort.  Don has kept the Saints respectable, but they are facing an Indy team that really needs this win, especially staring down a contest against the Jags on the road next week.  The Colts should win this handily, though Don has a way of making things interesting   New Orleans 21 - Indianapolis 31

Chicago (7-1) @ Carolina (2-6)
The Bears feel from the ranks from the unbeaten with a tough loss against a tough Eagles team, where Philly just kept the tension in the NFC East tight with their last second FG win after a costly PIP.  While the loss dropped the Bears into a tie for the top seed in the NFC, they still stand as the favorite for a repeat performance as PAFL champions.  The Panthers hung around the Rams last week, though the final score would indicate a closer game than it actually was. While having Mahomes always gives a team a chance, Calvin has just too many weapons and too good of a defense to see lightning strike twice.  Chicago 31 - Carolina 20

Tampa Bay (1-7) @ Minnesota (3-5)
Matt Ryan simply had a horrible game at the wrong time last week, dropping the Vikings to 3-5 and in danger of not just missing the playoffs, but of having their first losing record in franchise history.  Tampa meanwhile secured their 1st win of the season, with tons of help from Zack Wilson, who is working hard to hold a clipboard next season behind Bryce Young down in Atlanta.  This week, I tend to believe the snake-bitten Vikings will look to get a step closer to trying to salvage their season, while the Bucs continue to wonder just how good Carter or Anderson would look in pewter and red.  Tampa Bay 17 - Minnesota 27

Cleveland (8-0) @ Dallas (7-1)
Definitely the GOTW, and one that should be a great one, matching two fantastic teams.  Cleveland is one of two unbeaten teams, and with that defense, it's almost absurd to think of how teams can even score on them, allowing a ridiculous 49.5 yards on the ground per game.  Dallas makes their living behind the top RB in the league in Jonathan Taylor, though they are far from being a one trick pony, with Waddle averaging nearly 100 YPG in the air.  What makes me lean Cleveland in this game is their league leading scoring; while a chunk of it is from the defensive side of the ball, they still can manage to put up points.  Cleveland has stood up as a favorite to win it all since the beginning of the season, and I haven't seen a reason to change my mind so far.  Cleveland 30 - Dallas 27

Green Bay (5-3) @ Philadelphia (5-3)
Both teams managed to score upset wins last week, with Green Bay toughing it out over Denver, while Philly managed to serve the Bears their first loss of the season.  This game looms fairly large, as the winner not only has a game on the other for an NFC playoff spot, but also will have the tie-breaker when it comes to H2H and conference record.  While I think it will be an entertaining game, I have to give the edge to the Eagles, who have the slight edge in talent, along with home field.   Green Bay 24 - Philadelphia 28

Cincinnati (7-1) @ Los Angeles (A) (3-5)
Nino continues to mark his PAFL return with success and a 3 game lead in the AFC Central, as he looks to secure a bye for the first round of the playoffs.  Meanwhile, the Chargers are on a string of consecutive games where they will be facing playoff-worthy teams, so they will be needing to secure a break in order to jump back in the playoff race.  To quote the great philosophers Cage the Elephant, there ain't no rest for the wicked, but the Chargers will have their work cut out for them taking on a very talented Bengals squad   Cincinnati 31 - Los Angeles (A) 21

Las Vegas (4-4) @ Detroit (4-4)
The Raiders have managed to even their record last week and, barring a major upset by the 49ers over the Jags, look to get into a 1st place tie by the end of this week.  That said, Detroit scored a major win last week over the Vikings and are in the middle of their own playoff battle.  While I would say it would be a major mistake to overlook the Lions, the Raiders have a significant edge in talent, and should be able to use that to keep Detroit at bay.  Las Vegas 28 - Detroit 21

Buffalo (6-2) @ New York (N) (6-2)
Buffalo has had 2 tough losses in a row, and while they would be hard pressed to miss the playoffs, they have fallen out of the discussion of winning the AFC East. The Giants are in the middle of their own battle to keep pace in the NFC East, with a couple of very good teams looking like they will be staying home in that conference. Clearly, this game will have more bearing on the NFC playoff picture than the AFC, but I suspect that Buffalo will somehow get back on the winning track and manage to squeak out a win.  Buffalo 27 - New York 24

Seattle (0-8) @ Denver (4-4)
Seattle and Atlanta continue their slide towards the Bryce Young Bowl, while Denver is starting to get their season back on track.  Don has done a decent job of subbing for Denver, and this game should allow the Broncos to keep pace and most likely, see the AFC West in a 3-way tie by the end of this week.  This race should be one that will be entertaining for the rest of the season.  Seattle 14 - Denver 27

Kansas City (2-6) @ Miami (1-7)
This is a tough game to call; few teams have done more with less than Kansas City has, and no team has probably fallen short of expectations more than the Dolphins have, so it should be a solid battle and an entertaining game. On paper, this should be a game that Miami wins comfortably, though I have a sneaking suspicion that the Chiefs find a way to keep the game close and possibly pull off another upset   Kansas City 21 - Miami 24

Arizona (5-3) @ Atlanta (0-8)
Arizona has gotten thumped the last 2 weeks, as Tannehill has went, well, Tannehill, and both of the teams they were facing had good defenses.  This week, the Cards get a bit of reprieve as they face the Falcons, though at this point, no team should be overlooked. The Falcons look to continue their battle for the top pick in the upcoming draft, where replacing Zach Wilson should be a priority. Arizona 28 - Atlanta 10

Tennessee (3-5) @ Pittsburgh (1-7)
Few teams have gotten the short end of the stick more than the Titans, and they have an uphill climb ahead if they are looking to get back into playoff contention.  The Steelers currently sit with a Top 5 pick in the upcoming rookie draft, where snagging a QB either there or by trade will be a top priority.  This should be a week wehre Tennessee gets to shake off some ghosts and manages to get a bit ahead before facing division rival and leader Cincinnati next week.   Tennessee 28 - Pittsburgh 17
