PAFL Week 17 - Write ups

New York (N) (9-7) @ Washington (4-12)
New York secures the last playoff spot in the NFC with a win this week against the Commanders, and will travel to whoever wins the NFC West crown (currently looking like the Rams, depending on how they do against the Bengals....more on that later).  Washington has played better than expected with the tools they had, and have a nice young nucleas coming on board, but that won't bear alot of fruit this week, as Ken looks to make the dance with a win.  New York (N) 27- Washington 17

Jacksonville (16-0) @ Buffalo (13-3)
Jacksonville is primed and ready to secure an unbeaten season and go into the playoffs hosting everyone in "DUVAL".  Gut check time though...the Jags won the first game with no time left in Jacksonville, getting a 50 yard field goal with only 35 seconds left on the clock.  This game is in Buffalo, and as someone who has the Bills in another league, the elements can often take away a fair amount of the passing game.  In short, between the DKS gods (who hate undefeated teams), the Bills running game and their ability to make Jacksonville one-dimensional, I have to give the ever-so-slight nod to Buffalo based on HFA; thankfully for Jacksonville, any playoff rematch will be in Florida, where sunshine and rainbows can again rule the day.  Jacksonville 21 - Buffalo 24

San Francisco (9-7) @ Detroit (9-7)
This game may not matter, as both teams need a win to stay in the race to make the playoffs, but neither team can secure a playoff spot with a win.  On the surface...what a horrible horrible matchup this is for the 49ers; they don't have a very dominant running game, and Detroit has one of the best secondaries in the PAFL.  Teams that have beaten the Lions this season relied on stout rushing attacks, but I don't see how the fatigued receiving corp of San Fran is going to match up with Diggs and Awuzie.  If this was the first game of the season, I think this would be a barn-burner; now, it may not be all that close.  San Francisco 14 - Detroit 27

Carolina (3-13) @ Philadelphia (13-3)
Philly has really no reason to risk much this game, as they have home field locked up, but can't get the top seed with a win regardless...so that makes calling this game a bit risky, depending on who dresses.  That said, the Eagles have been dominant this season, and soundly beat the Panthers by 20 the last time they played.  I'm sure that the Panthers will make this a more respectable showing, and with Mahomes, all things are possible, but I think Rick would like to enter the playoffs on a roll.  Carolina 21 - Philadelphia 27

Green Bay (7-9) @ Minnesota (7-9)
For the 1st time in the PAFL, the Eric and the Vikings won't have a winning record to finish the season; there are certainly games that Eric will look back on and sigh, but regardless, he does have the chance to secure 3rd place in the NFC Central.  The Packers had an impressive win over the Raiders last week to get to this position, but the 2nd half of their season has seen them slowly slip record-wise.  In a game of pride, I am going to get sentimental and see the Vikings go out on a winning note, as they search from someone not named Ryan to lead them.  SKOL!  Green Bay 21 - Minnesota 24

Tampa Bay (4-12) @ Miami (6-10)
Both of these teams are looking toward the off-season, though I see the Bucs as having solid reasons to be optimistic, with better days ahead.  The Dolphins are rebuilding too, but in the ultra-competitive AFC East, they may have to wait a season or two longer to see their rebuild pay off.  This week, the Dolphins are at home, and have just a bit more talent, so I am going with them ever so slightly...honestly, this game is a toss up, but I am obliged to pick someone.  Tampa Bay 21 - Miami 22

Seattle (1-15) @ Chicago (15-1)
Calvin prepares his Bears to repeat his Super Bowl win having secured the top seed in the NFC, and meeting the 1 win Seahawks with a bye week on the way...tanned and rested most assuredly makes this challenge just that much easier.  Yeah, I'm sure the Bears are sitting some guys, and yeah, the game might be closer than a #1 seed would like...but Chicago is still going to win.  Seattle 10 - Chicago 24

Cleveland (11-5) @ New Orleans (3-13)
Fun fact...of the 5 losses that Cleveland has, 4 of them have come against the AFC East, with only the Cowboys tagging them with a loss outside the division.  While Stan has been stymied by the likes of Jacksonville and Buffalo, two teams they will have to beat in order to make it to a Super Bowl, they should find the rowing alot easier against the likes of New Orleans, where Don is dreaming that 8 man football comes into vogue in the PAFL and his injury-depleted roster.  Meditate Don, and say the magic mantra "Draft...Draft...Draft".  Cleveland 27 - New Orleans 10

Atlanta (1-15) @ Los Angeles (A) (8-8)

Atlanta got shellacked last week by the Titans, and face a Chargers squad that has gone 5-2 over their last 7 games and might actually finish the regular season with a winning record.  I'm sure that Daniel looks at that Bears game and thinks of what might have been, but this strong finish to his season bodes well for the off-season, and guys getting just a bit better. In the meantime....  Atlanta 10 - Los Angeles (A) 27

Cincinnati (13-3) @ Los Angeles (N) (12-4)
Quite possibly the GOTW, as Cincy has a 1st round bye wrapped up and really don't have alot to play for other than pride.  One would assume that the Bengals will be sitting some guys, while the Rams will be playing next week, regardless of whether they win the division or enter as a wild card.  Something tells me Kenny wants the homefield that first week, and wants to host either New York or Detroit, setting himself up for a grudge match against Rick in the 2nd round.  I am going to give the slight edge to the Rams, simply because there is less for the Bengals to play for, and Kenny worked too hard to not try and win the division.  Cincinnati 21 - Los Angeles (N) 24

Indianapolis (10-6) @ Kansas City (3-13)
Win and they are in....after all the tough losses this season for Indy, they have a chance to wrap up the 6 seed and play the winner of the AFC West, which could be either the 49ers or the Raiders.  Given the tight games they have had all season, it is fitting they play an over-achieving KC squad, who have given teams headaches, even when they lose.  I think Bob is well past looking past anyone, and I expect to see them score the win and then cause havoc in the playoffs.  Indianapolis 27 - Kansas City 17

Pittsburgh (4-12) @ Tennessee (5-11)
Tennessee decided to wake up from their slumber and lay 53 points on the Falcons last week; this is a different week however, and a Pittsburgh win gives them the season sweep over the Titans and lifts them from the basement in the division.  While the gap this season between Tennessee and Indy has been greater than I would have predicted, the Titans still have the ability to impress from time to time, and so I give them the edge this week to sneak past the Steelers and secure 3rd place in the division.  Pittsburgh 18 - Tennessee 24

Dallas (11-5) @ Arizona (12-4)
There is an excellent chance these two teams will be meeting up again next week in the 1st round of the playoffs; a healthy Cowboys team can give any team in this league a run for their money, but the injured secondary in Dallas makes the sledding that much harder.  I'm giving a slight edge to Arizona, even with me sitting a few guys as we end the season.  Dallas 21 - Arizona 24

Denver (6-10) @ Las Vegas (9-7)
Well, the yo-yo season that has played out for the Raiders, with them in position to either be the #3 seed, or miss the playoffs entirely.  The lack of consistent QB play, along with fatigue at RB, really stymies a Las Vegas team that needs to pull out a win.  Rudy has been getting used to playing Denver, and the defense of Las Vegas is plenty capable of holding just about any team down; question is which version of the Raiders show up this week.  I'm thinking it just might be crazy enough to consider that the Broncos ruin the season that could-have-been, with Geno looking next year to lighting it up.  A close one yet....  Denver 27 - Las Vegas 24
