The Green Bay Packers are coming off an emotional, 31-21, win over the divisional rival Detroit Lions. With the short week, the club has to get ready for a charged up Washington squad that is trying to even its record following a rough and tumble physical affair against one of their divisional rivals (The New York Giants). 

   Washington saw Giant rookie HB Cam Skattebo take the first snap from scrimmage off the left side and blast his way through for an 80-yard score! The burly Arizona State Grad would be shut down the rest of the game rushing 23 more times, but for only 40 yards. Still, QB Jayden Daniels would be intercepted twice and the backfield duo of Austin Ekeler and Jacory Croskey-Merritt could only muster 14 yards on the ground on 13 tries versus the stiff Giants' front 7.

   The Pack abandoned the running game early on and leaned on the arm of QB Jordan Love who did not disappoint. Love would throw for 354 yards and 4 touchdowns while completing 39 of 49 attempts and absorbing just 1 sack! Micah Parsons came up with a huge sack, the team benfitted from a key roughing the passer flag on Detroit late in the game, and Love would find WR Christian Watson with the game clinching score.

   Both teams will need to get at least some running game going if they hope to have consistent success this season. The Commanders did a masterful job stopping the run last week aside from the opening play. Green Bay was ok versus the run, but Lion backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery combined for 98 yards on 22 carries (4.45 YPC). Daniels is quick on his feet and his abiltiy to extend plays out of the pocket could be key versus the edge rushing pair of Parsons and Rashan Gary.

   Final Analysis: The Packers' O-Line might not be good enough to establish a running game versus top defensive fronts. If they become one-dimensional again, the Commanders should have enough of a running game and Daniels should make some plays downfield to pull this one out. Washington 26-20.       

1:00 PM: JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (0-1) AT CINCINNATI BENGALS (1-0)

Cinci Tries to Stay perfect Early in Season. Jags Already Desparate?

   Jacksonville fell apart in the 4th quarter last week and saw the Carolina Panthers tally 15 points in the final frame and roll away with a surprising, 43-22, win. The Bengals gave Browns' rookie QB Shedeur Sanders a rude welcoming to the PFL picking him off twice and limiting him to just a 54% (13-24) completion rate as they dumped Cleveland, 24-10.

   Cinci and QB Joe Burrow could struggle against the normally formidable Jaguars' defense, but there might be a flux in the coaching there. If the Jags cannot get their staff together, it is a probable win for the Bengals. NO LINE

  1:00 PM CHICAGO BEARS (1-0) AT DETROIT LIONS (0-1)

Confident Bears Head to Motown to Face Rival Lions. Detroit Smarting From Tough Loss to Pack 

  There is no lacking confidence these days in the Chicago Bears' camp. HC Matej Orazem was sure his team would compete for the NFC North crown before the season started and was even more sure of his prognostication after his club thoroughly trounced the defending divisional champion Minnesota Vikings last week at Soldier Field, 41-21. Orazem felt if his team could run the football that success was sure to follow. While the ground game was not stifled, it was not dynamic either. Still, Audric Estime and D'Andre Swift would account for 94 yards on 25 carries (3.76 YPC). QB Caleb Williams threw for 390 yards and 3 touchdowns in the rout and the defense sacked Viking QB JJ McCarthy 7 times while holding their top back, Aaron Jones, to a mere 14 yards on 7 carries. The Lions would be outscored, 24-7, in the second half of their game against the Packers at Lambeau Field. The team did not play poorly, but QB Jared Goff could not get the ball downfield. A huge roughing the passer penalty on DT Alim McNeil would keep a Packer drive alive that, ultimately, cost the team the game.

   Final Analysis: The Bears looked like the top team in the division last week and will try to keep that Mojo going this week versus a Lions' team that is in jeopardy of falling to 0-2 within the division. Detroit is a talented team and can win this game for sure, but they will need some bigger plays out of Goff (19-24-182 last week) if they want to come out on top. DT DJ Reader and WR Kalif Raymond are listed as Week-to-week for Lions. Chicago 24-21. 

  1:00 PM LOS ANGELES RAMS (1-0) AT TENNESSEE TITANS (0-1)

Surprising Rams Visit Deflated Titans

   HC Manny had a successful debut at the helm of the Rams as his club upended the Houston Texans, 26-16, last week. The defense was outstanding sacking Texan QB CJ Stroud 9 times and intercepting him twice. Nate Landman and the ferocious Jared Verse racked up 3 and 2.5 sacks respectively in the big W. Tennessee simply could not stop the short passing game of the Denver Broncos and fell, 27-13. The pass defense was riddled by Bronco QB Bo Nix for 408 yards. Rookie QB Cam Ward had a subdued debut throwing for just 185 yards. He did get help from HB Tony Pollard who had a fine game rushing for 101 yards on 14 carries, but it was not enough.

   LA can win here especially if the defense stays hot. The running game needs to improve, however, or else QB Matt Stafford will need to shoulder the load. The Titans' secondary could be helped with a better pass rush and the offense really needs Ward to be just a bit more impactful.

   Final Analysis: LA is excited. Tennessee is anxious. If the Titans can get their pass D figured out, they should be OK, but the team still needs more pop out of Ward if they want to win games. Tough one to call. Tennessee 22-18.

1:00 PM: NEW YORK GIANTS (1-0) AT DALLAS COWBOYS (0-1)

G-Men Visit Big D for Big Clash

  The Giants' defense held Washington in check much of the game last week as Big Blue came away with a key NFC East win, 22-15. The D held the Commanders scoreless for the first three quarters of the game. However, the offense was not particularly overwhelming with rookie QB Jaxson Dart getting the nod over veteran Russell Wilson! Dart would finish with 256 yards and a TD but completed just 58% (14-24) of his pass attempts while being sacked 5 times. Dallas played a spirited game against the defending PFL champion Philadelphia Eagles, but came up short, 27-20. QB Dak Prescott was limited to 55% throwing (22-40). HB Javonte Williams played well (10-63-6.3 YPC), but was, perhaps, not used enough to have a major effect and the Dallas' run defense could not shut down HB Saquon Barkley (26-128-4.9 YPC).

   The Giants like to run the football, but struggled outside of an 80-yard TD burst on the very first play of the game by rookie HB Cam Skattebo. They stand a good chance to get the ground game churning this week. New York's defense could frustrate Dallas as well. If the G-Men can run the ball, then Dart should fare better. However, if the Cowboys can contain Skattebo, this one could get dicey indeed.

   Final Analysis: Giant Rookies Dart and Skattebo have the Gotham area abuzz, but Prescott rarely has back-to-back poor games and the Cowboys could be set for a nice rebound effort. Dallas 23-21.

1:00 PM: CLEVELAND BROWNS (0-1) AT BALTIMORE RAVENS (0-0-1)   

   New Browns VS Old Browns!

    The rivalry between these two franchises is well known. When the Modell family picked up stakes and headed to the vacant city of Baltimore (The Colts had moved to Indianapolis) it left the rabid Browns' fans in a state of morbid depression combined with anger. Along came Al Lerner to save the day and bring a franchies back to Cleveland. Lerner would pass away and his son, Randy, took the reins of the club, He, then, would end up selling the organization to Jimmy Haslam. The team tried to win with Baker Mayfield, but soon soured on him and he headed to Tampa Bay to become an MVP candidate. Then there was the infamous efforts to get around the NFL rules with the disastrous Deshaun Watson debacle. And now the team is being led by rookie QB Shedeur Sanders. Sanders did not have a good enough game last week against the Bengals as Cleveland would drop its opener. Of course, at the same time, the Baltimore Ravens have fourished in the PFL. The team got into a wild one last week with the ever-improving Buffalo Bills, and had to settle for a, 31-31, OT tie. QB Lamar Jackson threw the ball a stunning 69 times for 377 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also ran for 79 yards and 2 more TDs on 6 carries and got help from the punishing runs of Derrick Henry who posted 78 yards on 13 carries. The Ravens' D did sack Bills' QB Josh Allen 7 times, but the unit also saw Allen throw for 347 yards and 2 scores and  run for 54 yards and a 3rd TD! Buffalo also dominated the TOP stat by a whopping 13 minutes.

   Final Analysis: Cleveland likely does not have the quarterback play to keep up with the hi-octane Baltimore offense. If there is a weakness at all for the Ravens, it would be in their pass defense and that, quite simply, is not a real strength for the Browns at the moment. Baltimore 32-17.

1:00 PM: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (1-0) AT NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (1-0)

Niners Seek Gold With Early Season Test in The Big Easy

    The San Francisco 49ers began their season by changing their MO in a big way. After two unsuccessful campaigns where the club relied, almost exclusively, on the arm of Brock Purdy the club rediscovered the legs of HB Christian McCaffrey and the balanced attack led to a major win over divisional rival Seattle, 22-16! Purdy threw for 411 yards and 3 touchdowns, but he would also be sacked 5 times and intercepted twice. It was that very type of stat-line in the past that often had Purdy with numbers, but the the team with losses. This time, however, McCaffrey would be given the rock 17 times and the veteran back responded with 72 yards (4.2 YPC). The more balanced approach, then helped keep the defense off the field a bit more than in the past and that led to a successful defensive outcome as well. Seattle's Kenneth Walker would rush for a very impressive 116 yards on just 14 carries, but QB Sam Darnold would be checked for only 161 yards through the air. The Saints, meanwhile, got caught in an instant classic battle with the Arizona Cardinals before pulling off a heart-stopping thriller, 32-28. With 7 seconds remaining in the game, and Arizona at the Saints' 7 yard line, QB Kyler Murray would find WR Gabe Davis underneath at the 1 and it appeared he rolled into the endzone for the winning score. However, officlals ruled he was down before breaking the plane of the goal line and the game ended with Arizona at the 1-inch line! 

   The Niners' run defense will need to be better than last week. HB Alvin Kamara can be a punishing back inside and is coming off a dismal game last week in which he totalled just 18 yards on 17 carries. QB Spencer Rattler had an outstanding game throwing for 357 yards and 4 scores while completing 87% (27-31) of his passes! If San Fran can keep Kamara under wraps again, the odds are Rattler will not duplicate his week 1 near perfect outing. Arizona was able to find a bit of running room against the Halos last week and the Niners will need McCaffrey to be at least average. 

   Final Analysis: San Fran can pull this one off if they do not get one-dimensional and if Rattler comes back to earth. Coach Mike Kleinknecht usually wins these types of games, but feel San Fran might pull out the stunner. San Francisco 26-23. 

 1:00 PM: BUFFALO BILLS (0-0-1) AT NEW YORK JETS (1-0)

Big Time Early Season Empire State Battle at Metlife Stadium!

    The Buffalo Bills keep getting better each and every seaosn under HC Rodney Smith. Last week, the club fought the mighty Baltimore Ravens to a standstill final that ended in a, 31-31, tie. The worrisome aspect of the game, however, was a defense that yielded 515 yards of offense to the Ravens and could not get any takeaways. Despite that, though, the club was right there all the way. HB James Cook will need to be better than his week 1, 20-45-0, stat line if the Bills hope to get by the Jets. New York turned a close late third quarter game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week into a bit of a rout winning going away, 44-24. The score was just 27-24 late in the third before the Jets turned on the afterburners and scored the final 17 points of the game. Backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen combined for 101 yards on 15 carries (6.73 YPC) and Ex-Bear, Ex-Steeler Justin Fields threw for 438 yards and 4 touchdowns as the latest edition of Mikey-Ball has come to the Metro area. The speedy Mecole Hardman just out-ran folks and caught 10 balls for 202 yards and 2 TDs!

   Final Analysis: If the Jets can keep getting the mileage out of Hardman he will be the steal of the free agency period. Buffalo was way too porous against the Baltimore passing game and could experience a similar outome this week. New York 35-27.

1:00 PM: NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (1-0) AT MIAMI DOLPHINS (1-0)

Pats and Fins in Critical AFC Matchup in Florida Heat

    Both of these teams are hoping to contend in the division and already saw the impact Coach Mike Kleinknecht had in week 1 as "Mikey-Ball" has come to Metlife Stadium and the Jets. New England QB Drake Maye managed the game well in a lopsided, 36-16, win over the Vegas Raiders last week. The Raiders, it seems, opted to totally abandon the passing game with QB Geno Smith and, instead, just kept handing the rock to their exciting and talented rookie tailback Ashton Jeanty. Jeanty would carry the ball an incredible 29 times for 196 yards and is, instantly, on pace to tote the ball some 493 times! Miami got into a wild shootout with the Indianapolis Colts and smoked the scoreboard for 29 4th quarter points enroute to the eventual, 47-40, victory. SS Ashton Davis and CB Rasul Douglas each had an interception of QB Anthony Richardson. Miami would swarm all over the Colt quarterback tandem of Richardson and Daniel Jones for 16 sacks as well! The hard hitting Dolphs would force 4 fumbles and Miami took full advantage. CB Kader Kohou and edge Bradley Chubb would each scoop up a loose pigskin and take it to house!

   New England does a very good job at keeping Maye out of harms way and is almost certianly not going to take 16 sacks ala the Colts did last week. The Dolphins ran the ball pretty effectively (17-94), but could use some more touches for RBs De'Von Achane and Alexander Mattison. The Raiders' insistance on running the ball last week altered stats quite a bit and really did not give the Patriots much of an opportunity to get after the quarterback. Tua Tagovailoa will provide some chances for the New England D to shine although a more impactful Dolphins' ground game could cause issues. If the weather is hot and humid, it could have an effect upon the New England bunch. Miami 25-22.

1:00 PM: SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (0-1) AT PITTSBURGH STEELERS (0-1)

Two Teams in Serious Need of a Win 

     The Seahawks and Steelers are two clubs that cannot fall to 0-2 considering the divisions they play in. Seattle lost a key opener to the rival San Francisco 49ers, 22-16, and the Steelers saw a close game with the Jets get away from them late in the third quarter of a, 44-24, defeat. The Seattle pass defense, which has been a staple for years now, was not up to par allowing Niners' QB Brock Purdy to throw for 411 yards and 3 touchdowns. The unit did get two interceptions and sacked Purdy 5 times, but the D also saw HB Christian McCaffrey run for 72 yards. The 'Hawks got a good game out of HB Kenneth Walker (14-116-1), but QB Sam Darnold only had 161 yards through the air. The Steelers got 94 yards rushing out of tailback Jaylen Warren and 263 yards passing and 2 TDs from Grizzled veteran QB Aaron Rodgers. They could have used a bit more out of Rodgers. He was sacked just once which is a promising stat.

   Final Analysis: Both teams showed they can run the ball. It may get down to Rodgers vs Sam Darnold. Pittsburgh did not show an ability to stop either the run or the pass last week. Close one for sure. Seattle 27-25.

4:05 PM: CAROLINA PANTHERS (1-0) AT ARIZONA CARDINALS (0-1)

Panthers Feeling Good. Cards Coming Off Dramatic Loss to Saints

   It has been a long time since Carolina posted 40 points in a game and the team can only pray that their, 43-22, win over the Jacksonville Jaguars last week was not an anomaly. The Cardinals came within an eyelash, literally, of stunning the New Oreans Saints on the final play of the game only to have WR Gabe Davis be stopped at virtually the 1-inch line! The offense had a fine day, overall, with QB Kyler Murray throwing for 263 yards and 2 touchdowns and HB Trey Benson contributing 72 yards rushing on 15 carries. The D was very good versus the running of Alvin Kamara (17-18-0), but had a tough time containing 2nd year signal caller Spencer Rattler who got loose for 58 yards. Rattler also rattled the 'Zona secondary to the tune of 357 yards and 4 touchdowns and was near perfect on the day connecting on 27 of 31 attempts (87%)!

   The Cards will need to play better pass defense as the year unfolds. The team has weapons and Murray can be tough to stop. Panther QB Bryce Young can, at times, be oblivious to pressure and could see some heat from the Arizona D this week. Murray is the type quarterback that is just as likely to be dynamic as he is dreadful. He can win games with his legs getting outside the pocket and then either running or finding an open receiver downfield, but he can break your heart with an ill-advised throw too. 

   Final Analysis: Murray is usually the key to the success or failure of the Cardinal offense. Carolina has a better defense than many may know about and a very good O-line as well. If the Panthers can run the ball and keep Young in favorable down and distance situations, the team can win this game. Could be a close one. Arizona 27-20.

4:05 PM: DENVER BRONCOS (1-0) AT INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (0-1)

Which Team Will Have  More Horsepower?

     The Denver Broncos are hoping to start their season at 2-0 and maybe make some noise in the AFC West. The Indianapolis Colts used two quarterbacks in Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones in their wild game with the Miami Dolphins last week. A-Rich would throw for 367 yards and 3 touchdowns, but he would be picked off twice and sacked some 11 times. Jones would throw for another 148 yards and a score, but he would be dropped 5 more times. The 16 total sacks was, in the end, disastrous. Tailback Jonathan Taylor had a tough time finding room to run and finished his day off with 14 carries for only 22 yards as the Colts dropped the, 47-40, decision to the Fins. The Colts saw Miami record two defensive touchdowns in the game off fumble recoveries as Indy committed 4 turnovers.

   Denver has a legit defense and enough offense to play solid field position football. QB Bo Nix ripped the Tennessee Titans for 408 yards passing and did not suffer a single sack. Nix would also add a critical 18-yard TD scamper to help the cause. Indy showed it can score, but the D will need to improve and the team cannot, obviously, turn it over 4 times nor allow 16 sacks and expect to consistently win games.

   Final Analysis: Denver did win last week, but it was not easy and it was a bit clunky. They cannot get into a wild shootout with the Colts and will need some running out of their backs in order to keep Nix in favorable down and distance situations. The Colts will not likely turn it over as much or give up nearly as many sacks and there is a great chance they play a much better game this week. Indianapolis 28-24.

4:25 PM:  PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (1-0) at KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (1-0)

    These two teams have dominated the league for two years running now. The Chiefs defeated the Eagles, 50-48, two seasons ago in the highest scoring Super Bowl in PFL History. Last year, Philly returned the favor as they upended KC, 30-24. Philly's defense did the job last week against the upset minded Dallas Cowboys, while the offense purred with QB Jalen Hurts and RB Saquon Barkley leading the attack. Hurts would throw for 308 yards and a touchdown while completing 81% (26-32) of his attempts. Barkley gashed the Pokes for 128 yards rushing on 24 carries. Kansas City stopped the Los Angeles Chargers, 25-12, as they were able to slowly pull away in the second half and spoil the coaching debut of Jim Gamble. In an amazing stat, the Chiefs would finish with a -5 yards rushing as tailback Isaiah Pacheco had, perhaps, the worst game of his career as he ran 7 times for a startling -18 yards! Despite that, though, KC was still able to pull out the W as QB Patrick Mahomes threw for 366 yards and 2 touchdowns and the D would intercept Charger QB Justin Herbert twice.

   This one could get down to which team has the better running game. The Eagles have the great Saquon Barkley to give the ball to and he is running behind an elite offensive line. Pacheco has made a living running wide for big yardage, but the Chiefs' O-Line is not what it used to be. Yes, they have the talents of C Creed Humphrey and RG Trey Smith, but LT Josh Simmons is a rookie and LG Kingsley Suamataia is a second year player who has ability, but is still lacking top level run blocking skills. In addition, the Philly interior defensive line features, perhaps, the best tandem in the game with DTs Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis. If they can bottle up the inside and Pacheco cannot have success running wide, it may force the Chiefs to rely on Mahomes almost entirely. Both Mahomes and Hurts can extend plays outside the pocket and can beat teams with their legs.

   Final Analysis: An early season treat for the league. The Eagles, though, seem to have an edge in overall talent, while KC has the stability at coaching with long time HC Jason Hogan prowling the sidelines. Gonna give the nod to the vet coach here. Kansas City 25-22. 

SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

8:20 PM: ATLANTA FALCONS (1-0) AT MINNESOTA VIKINGS (0-1)

Falcons Try to Keep Minny Reeling. Vikes Need to Patch Holes in Ship ASAP

   The Atlanta Falcons had it easy last season in the NFC South and cruised to the division title. This year, however, the divisional foe New Orleans Saints have Mike Kleinknecht running the show and the Carolina Panthers should be an improved squad. QB Michael Penix had a good performance in the Falcons', 31-25, overtime win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. He would throw for 339 yards and 3 touchdowns, while not turning it over. Penix had some serious help, too, as HB Bijan Robinson rumbled for 194 yards on 26 carries! The defense did allow Bucs' HB Bucky Irving to gallop for 134 yards on 14 carries, but it also picked off QB Baker Mayfield 3 times and held him to just 224 yards passing. The Vikings' defense was shredded all game long by a fired up Chicago Bears' bunch in a Monday Night Prime Time, 41-21, whipping. Bears' QB Caleb Williams had a field day throwing for 390 yards and 3 touchdowns, backs D'Andre Swift and David Montgomery combined for 94 yards rushing, and a bit of trickery saw WR Rome Odunz take the ball 3 times for 21 more yards. Minnesota could not run the ball much and QB JJ McCarthy would end as the team's top rusher with 59 yards on 7 scrambles. J-Mac did throw for 410 yards and 2 TDs, but he also would be dropped 7 times. In all, THe Vikes gave up 520 yards of offense to Chicago, while amassing 425 yards of their own.

   Obviously, Minnesota has to fix their defensive shortcomings now or risk starting the season at 0-2. Yes, it was just week 1, and the Vikings are cretainly a better team on D than they showed last week. They do, though, have to face an Atlanta team that has quite a few weapons to lean on. Aside from Penix and Robinson, the Falcons have WRs Drake London and Darnell Mooney as well as TE Kyle Pitts. In addition, Atlanta boasts one of the better O-Lines in the PFL especially at tackle.

   Final Analysis: Minnesota must regroup quickly and needs HB Aaron Jones to show up. While McCarthy is a capable signal caller and has some great targets in WRs Justin Jeffereson, Jordan Addison, and TE TJ Hockenson, the reality is Atlanta seems to have more offensive balance. The status of LB Blake Cashman is wweek-to-week and, if he cannot go, that would further deplete the Minnesota D. Atlanta 27-24.

DOUBLE HEADER!!!

7:00 PM: TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (0-1) AT HOUSTON TEXANS (0-1)

Bucs Need to Rebound From Tough OT Loss. Texans Need to Find a Personality

   Tampa Bay dropped a key season opening game, 32-25, to the defending NFC South champion Atlanta Falcons in over-time. QB Baker Mayfield would suffer three interceptions on the day. HB Bucky Irving was explosive rushing for 134 tards on just 14 carries, but the Buccaneeer defense could not stop Atlanta's duo of HB Bijan Robinson (26-194-1) or QB Michael Penix (31-40-3339-3) at all and the lack of D has to be a worry heading into week 2. Houston needs to find an identity ASAP. QB CJ Stroud had a dismal outing completing only 55% (15-27) of his passes for 227 yards while getting sacked 9 times and tossing 2 picks. HB Joe Mixon could only garner 46 yards on 13 carries. LT Alaric Jackson would get beat off the edge too often ceding 3 sacks on the day.

   Final Analysis: Both teams' quarterbacks have to have better games this week. Houston has the added dilemma of needing their ground game to get going as well. It should get down to which QB has the better outing here. Tampa Bay 26-23.

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

10:00 PM: LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (0-1) AT LAS VEGAS RAIDERS (0-1)

Unhappy Campers Meet in Sin City With an 0-2 Start Staring One Team in the face

   The loser of this one could be in deep trouble right away. The Chargers were hoping to show they could hang with the mighty Kansas City Chiefs last week and did for much of the game before losing, 25-12. The defense was spectacular versus the run slamming KC tailback Isaiah Pacheco to the turf for a shocking -18 yards, that's not a typo folks, rushing on 7 carries! But QB Justin Herbert would throw two interceptions and get sacked 7 times to stymie the attack enough for the Chiefs to escape with the win. Vegas would be dominated by the New England Patriots, 36-16, and had little to be happy about other than the debut of RB Ashton Jeanty. Similar to the days when Saquon Barkely ran the ball for coach Gabe El Guapo, when he ran the Giants, the Raiders continued to just hand the ball to Jeanty despite the score. He would finish with 196 yards on 29 carries.
