Week 5 predictions

On the road again
Titans (2-2) snuck past the Saints last week. Now they hit the road against da Raiders.  Tennessee has been a second half team this year and will try to avoid being behind at half-time.  Titans will need to protect Russell better as Wilson has been sacked 16 times already.  Da Raiders (1-3) ran into a hot Sam Howell last falling to Washington.  Hard to identify what the issue has been for Las Vegas though O'Connell has played better than Ridder.  Raiders with only 5 sacks all season.  Lets see if the Titans can protect Wilson.  TEN 24 OAK 16

For NFC West Supremacy
Seahawks (3-1) fly into Los Angeles on the wings of a 3 game winning streak.  Seattle has converted an amazing 55% of third downs but are -4 on turnovers.  Burrow coming off his best game of the year against the Eagles.  Rams are undefeated with a big win against SF last week.  Rams are +5 on turnovers.  LA also with 14 sacks on defense.  An interesting matchup.  Seattle with some more weapons on offense while LA has more impact players on defense. Lets put the pressure on Don.  SEA 21 LA 20

Could this be the week?
Ravens (0-4) came up just short against the Steelers last week.  Levis has put together 2 very good games in a row.  Baltimore has had problems in the second and third quarters.  Joe likes to roll the dice on 4th down with the Ravens being successful on 6 out of 10.  Ravens strong on the defensive line.  49ers (3-1) thought their recent additions would make things interesting against the Rams.  But LA had their way with them.  Hurts had his first really bad game tossing not 1, not 2, but 3 INTs.  Mike Evans didn't miss a beat with his new team.  Ravens defensive line has an advantage.  Hurts should rebound while Levis is due to revert to the mean. Let's throw logical reasoning out and go with another upset pick.  BAL 24 SF 23

Game of the week ... NOT cool
Battle of winless teams.  Lions took an early lead against the Buccaneers before fading.  Detroit only coverting 26% on third down.  Lions below average WRs are taking a toll on Cousins.  The Packers have the record of shortest marriage this year.  They traded for Stefon Diggs last week before shipping him out this week.  Packers running game has had a tough go so far.  Goff has played consistently well all season.  But Jared is not happy about losing Stefon.  I believe we may see a few Lambeau leaps this week.  GB 20 DET 10

Who would have thought?
Steelers (3-1) hung on for dear life against the Ravens.  Pittsburgh has a stout group of linebackers who play like "Steel Curtain" fans expect.  The "Steel Curtain" has allowed opponents to only make 1 of 8 4th down attempts.  My Super Bowl pick finds themselves at 2-2.  The Browns have played top AFC teams the last 2 weeks.  Geno had his first bad game of the year last week.  Mostert continues running wild (7.3 ypc).  Chase with only 1 reception last week as well.  Will be tough for the "Steel Curtain".  CLV 35 PIT 10

Defending Champs hitting their stride
Buffalo (3-1) is roaming freely with a 3 game winning streak.  Buffalo has no turnovers and are plus 2 on turnovers.  New acquisition James Cook went over 100 yards last week.  They will be missing Zeitler from their offensive line.  Saints season is exact opposite of Bills.  After winning their first game, New Orleans (1-3) finds themselves with a 3 game losing streak.  They have scored 10,7,7 in these games.  Trevor has been sacked 21 times.  If this pace continues, Lawrence will be sacked over 80 times.  Ouch!  Left Tackle Armstead is out.  It's hard to win if you can't score.  BUF 27 NO 10

No time to celebrate
Minnesota got their first win last week over the Packers.  Vikings are +2 on turnovers.  They have a nice offense with threats by air or on the ground.   Undefeated Bengals sit on top of the AFC Central mauling all of their opposition with ease except for the Browns.  Cincy still has not committed a single turnover (they are +8 on turnovers).  Lamar has been playing at an MVP level.  Bengals so far have not had a letdown. CIN 34  MIN 17

Divisional leaders wage war
Giants (2-2) have a powerful defense.  GM Ken worked the phones and has aquired Stefon Diggs who is on his third team this year.  Last week New York gave up 20 points to Dallas in the 4th quarter to lose which has the NFC East showing a 4-way tie for first.  Tampa Bay (3-1) QB Carr finally had a good game last week.  Buccaneers traded for Derick Henry to try and boost their running game last week (averaging 3 ypc).  But the Lions were determined to not let Tampa Bay run the ball. I will pick the Giants based on their strong D.  NY 20 TB 13

Battle for NFC East Lead
Philadelphia (2-2) coming off a tough loss against the Seawawks.  They are another team that has a pattern of having a win followed by a loss pattern.  Eagles are converting 55% on third down.  Purdy has been playing excellently.  Dallas is in a funk.  They had to score 20 points in the 4th quarter to defeat New York.  Coach Barnhart is at wits end.  Dak has not been playing well.  The DBs have not been making plays.  Yet here they are tied for first.  Maybe this is the week everything clicks for Dak.  I'm picking for the Eagle pattern to be broken.  DAL 31 PHI 24

Who will step up in the NFC Central?
Bears (1-3) were overcome by the Dolphins last week.  Bears are only converting 26% on 3rd down while their opponents are converting 46%.  Bears are minus 2 on turnovers.  Fields has only had 1 good game which of course they won.  Fields has been sacked 18 times though the Bears defense also has 18 sacks.  Panthers (1-3) are on a 3 game losing streak.  After scoring 30+ points in their first 2 games, they haven't scored more than 16 since.  While Mac Jones has been pretty average, Christian McCaffery has been running wild.  CAR 20 CHI 16

Battle of 2 surprising teams tied for first
Washington (2-2) coming off a solid win against Las Vegas.  Sam Howell did his best Mahommes impersonation completing 20 of 25 passes.  Commanders have a pattern of losing then winning which coincides with Howell's QB rating.  Don't look now, but Rudy has the Texas (3-1) tied for first in the AFC West.  Baker is playing inspired ball this season.  I'm not going to fight the Commanders pattern.  HOU 27 WAS 13

Here's lookin up at you
The Jaguars are still searching for their first win which is not unexpected as Jason is in the midst of a massive rebuild. Rebuilding takes time and Jason has Jacksonville on the right path. It will require patience of the fans. The Chiefs drained all the power from the Chargers last week leading Eric to suggest the Super Bowl trophy should be awarded immediately. While I'm sure the Jaguars will try their best, the talent deficit is just too great.    KC 28 LAC 20

Seeing Stars
Indianapolis  (4-0) finds themselves with a fantastic start to the season.  Last week they defeated a powerful Cleveland team.  They are +7 on turnovers.  Stroud has been playing very well though he played his worse game against the Browns. Miami (2-2) on a 2 game winning streak.  Their defense has stiffened the last 2 weeks by allowing only 9 points.  Phins will need to play a complete game to keep up with the Colts.  Hufanga S is out.  IND 34 MIA 23

Deuces are wild
Patriots (2-2) ran into a hot Texan team last week.  Minshew continues his pattern of alternating a good game with a bad one.  If the pattern holds, this week will be good for Minshew mania.  Patriots are minus 5 on turnovers.  Chargers (2-2) went on the road last week and had the Chiefs scalp them as Eric was vexed by Doug.  Chargers are minus 4 on turnovers.  Both teams need a win to stay in their divisional race.  Let's go with LA overcoming good Gardner.  LAC 38  NE 24
